Today’s Action – Track my progress in photos.
I was innocently reading the blogs I follow last night when I stumbled upon the No Comfort Zone Challenge posted by Inside Out Café. Crap. I immediately had an argument – with myself.
Everything I do it outside my comfort zone!
Walking Stairs and saving money is NOT comfortable.
Stopping lattes and smoking generic cigarettes is not fun.
Getting up at 4 to write my daily post is leaving comfort!
After I let all that just run through – I thought of the photos.
A couple of weeks ago amotherknows suggested I take photos to track my progress which caused me to break out in a sweat. I HATE photos. My mother loves telling people how she has no photos of me because I hid from the camera even as a child.
I am always a little surprised when I see myself in photos or film because it never matches up with how I see myself. A couple of years ago I was in a local PSA to recruit foster parents (I was a foster child). I never saw it – I avoided TV for the entire six months it ran.
I had asked my husband to take a ‘before’ photo of me after the suggestion from amotherknows. It sat on the thumb drive like a little grenade. In light of the No Comfort Zone challenge, I finally opened it up this morning.
There I was; all of me. I came very close to deleting my blog and walking away.
That woman will never hike the Inca Trail; she will never quit smoking, never change her life, never travel anywhere.
I turned my head to the voice on my shoulder and went ‘shhh’.
I modified the photo because this is how I see myself today – a sketch. I want my comfort to come from within me – not from hiding in the warm pile of fantasy and delusion. I want to find comfort in my successes.
I will take a photo each week as I struggle to define myself and become the person I was intended to be.

I am excited to celebrate your progress with you. I have been on such a journey for the past several years which is part of the reason I blog…to help others along the way. Can’t wait to see how the year unfolds!

Wonderful to read your post and see the area you want to focus on. It’s so strange how we focus on the faults and fail to see the beauty – the caring person, the nimble fingers, the beliefs we share with our children — All wonderful – just like you!
Thanks so much for sharing! Marge

I agree – it is like we use rose colored glasses for everyone else, but brown colored ones for ourselves

Being a photographer I tell people all the time I take pictures so I don’t have to be in them…after seeing a short video of me getting up and down off the floor I know why I hide from the camera too. We all see each other different then what the world sees us. I’m pretty sure that is how we live day to day. But know this…You are making this change for you. You have a dream and you are going to see it happen. You can do this. I am looking forward to seeing pictures from your trip :0)

My image of me is fine – until I see photos and realize it is not accurate
You are right, I don’t want to get hung up in how I ‘appear’. It is about fitness and health. I like thinking about posting photos from the trip – with me in every one!

Great way to do it.
Do you plan to use creative/artistic type self-portraits at all? It’s an interesting challenge to me, too…I love photography and photo editing (not that I do tons of it except with show photos, but, hey…
), so maybe I’ll incorporate this into my blog as well…hmm…

Yes – I was thinking about bringing myself into focus each week as I change..hopefully
This was very low tech photo modificaiton using Word 2010. I could see a lot of different projects coming out of this.

Cool.
I am really liking this idea. We’ll see where I take it for my own journey…should be interesting, at least, as I’m rather abstract and weird…hehe
Can’t wait to see your pics from your trip, as well!

You’re making all the right decisions, especially not listening to your doubts and walking away from your goal. I think using photos to document your journey will be very inspiring.

Ha! Understand that, too. Recently been chatting to romantic interest online, and he wanted me to send some pictures of myself (since he lives on the other side of the world and we can’t exactly chat in person)…I was nervous about sending them, hoping he wouldn’t be disappointed that I’m not a skinny super-model! Thankfully, he said he liked the pics…so I wasn’t totally deflated.

I wonder what it is in us that makes us own or internalize the rejection of others. I would like to smash it like a bug.

I’m sitting on the sidelines cheering for you!! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Breaking barriers and stepping out of our comfort zone is hard, but once done it’s also extremely liberating. I find that our ‘self’ can be very deceiving, in a way everything you are doing is in defiance of it. But that’s okay! Because just as revolutions happen around the world and through out history, revolutions also happen within us. Transformation is hard, but you already took the hardest step, the first one. Persevere and the fruits will be so sweet! Good luck!

What a great concept – revolution. I am starting a revolution in myself. Most revolutions work because those revolting are more numerous than those in power – I have sold myself a bill of goods and I am revolting. Thank you – what an empowering image you gave me this morning!
